ANGLING: DEE anglers have been alarmed by the news that a zander has been caught in the river in the Farndon area.
This predatory species, similar to a pike or a perch, is seen as a threat to the more common fish in the river and the catch has been reported to the Environment Agency who have yet to comment.
The fish, which weighed about 1lb, was caught by Ellesmere Port angler Ron Lilley.
Blacon's John Woodrow set a new venue record last week when fishing at Staffordmoor Fishery in Devon. In a five-hour session, he netted 229lbs of common and mirror carp up to the 9lbs mark. He also won the residents' match by taking 105-10-0 of carp, bream and crucians.
Frank Doran was top in the midweek veterans' open match at Hanchurch Fishery, Stoke-on-Trent with 33-10-0 of carp. Third was Ellesmere Port's Chris Walker with 28lbs of carp and tench.
The Phoenix SAC had a good day out of Whitby, where Keith Deal landed a 13lbs cod, beating Jerry Rosburgh's 11lbs ling and John Sherlock's 10lbs ling.
Paul Spencer easily won the Egerton Arms AC match on the Red Lion length of the Weaver, taking 4-7-0 of roach to the scales, ahead of Phil Dawson's 1-7-0 of roach and perch and Paul Morrelle's 1-2-0.
Ian Smith took first place in the Ellesmere Port Youth Club match on the rock pool at Hampton Springs with 56lbs of carp up to 8lbs. Paul Darlington had a 27lbs mixture, Dion Green took 10lbs.
Dennis Jones led the field in the Birkenhead Centre AC open match on the SU Canal at Calveley where he took 14-9-0 of bream. Ian Courtney had 6-7-8 of the same and Neil Patterson took 5-14-8 including eels of 2-1-0 and 1-12-0.
Castrol SAS took their juniors out to the Mersey bar and 14-year-old Spud Hughes was rewarded with a 4lbs tub gurnard to beat Lauren Kermode's 3lbs dogfish and eight-year-old Jack Kelly, who had a 2-8-0 dogfish.
Victory in the Caldy AS match at Lingmere Fishery went to Paul Robinson with 16-14-0 of carp. Andy Nicholson was next with 13-14-0 and Brian Fogg took 13-10-0.
The Greyhound, Saughall AC went to Abbey Lakes at Wigan, where Steve Taylor won with 19lbs of roach and skimmers, ahead of Mark Mealing's tench-based 15-2-0 and Pete Johnson's 9lbs of roach.
John Bristow was an easy winner of the Manley AC match at Old Hall Farm pool with a 14-12-0 mixture. Steve Roxburgh was next with 8lbs of tench, carp and rudd and Mark Davies settled for 7-10-0.
Upton AC fished their pairs KO match at Hampton Springs and Steve Hughes and Pete Ashton won with 56-5-0.
The Ermine AS went to the Weaver where Steve Bridson had 4-9-5 of roach and perch to beat John Croft's 4-1-0 and Dave Blackwell's 3-0-12.
Chris Hargadon took the honours in the Helsby Sports and Social Club AC match on the BICC factory pool. His chub and roach catch weighed 10-1-0, well clear of Steve Furfie's 7-8-0 of skim-mers and roach and Terry Archer's 4-4-0.
A 30lbs tope gave top spot to Martin Evans in the White Lion SAS match out of Caernarvon Bay. John Stock had an 8lbs skate and Reg Littler a 3lbs red gurnard.
James Hughes came out best in the Willaston AC match on the SU Canal at Cheswardine with chub and bream up to 2lbs for a total of 21-8-0. John Edwards had 8-10-0 of bream and Bernie Leatherbarrow took 7lbs of chub and bream.
John Sinkinson was a narrow winner of the British Aerospace, Broughton AC match at Heronbrook Fishery with 35-6-0 of barbel and carp, from Dave Jones with 35-2-0 of carp. Steve Williams was third with 34-5-0 of the same.
The Border Fishery was the venue for the Rake and Pikel AC match, which was won by Tony Bentley with 16-12-0 of carp. Dave Stewart was next with 10-12-0 and Jeff Edge third with 8-8-0.
Fred Woods needed only two fish to win the Blacon Social Club AC match on the Severn at Monkmoor. An 8-8-0 barbel and a 2-10-0 chub put him ahead of Peter Clay's 7-12-0 mixture and Michael Coleclough's 6-12-0.
With 6-14-0 of carp and small fish, Tony Johnson won the Piper AC match at Milton Green Fishery. Phil White was his nearest rival with 6-3-0 of barbel and carp with Keith Sanders third with 4-11-0, including a 4lbs carp.
John Wannop posted top weight in the Royal Mail, Chester AC match at Springlea Fishery with 25-3-0 of orfe and perch, well clear of Phil Roberts with a carp-based 16-8-0 and Ian Jones with an 11-1-0 mixture.
Billy Mason led at the end of the Neston Match Anglers' AC match at Offa's Dyke Fishery with 16-8-0 of carp, from Eric Maddock with 9-11-0 of crucians and Ted Evanson with 5-14-0, including a 5lbs mirror carp.
The Ellesmere Port British Legion AC match at Hampton Springs went to Andy Fletcher with 14-11-0 of carp from George Roberts's 11-3-0.
Mark Greasley chalked up another win in the Rivacre AC match on the Weaver with 5-10-0 of roach and perch. Dave Grimes was next with 4lbs and Ian Lloyd followed with 3-12-0.
Malpas AC fished club waters and Keith Arrowsmith came out best with 12-10-0 of tench. Bert Roberts was next with 5-12-0 from Alan Jones with 4-9-0. Top junior with 1lb was Kevin Arrowsmith.
Les Picken won the Burton Mere Fishery mid -week open match with a carp-based 47-1-8 from Steven Boyd's 38-2-0 and Ben Birchall's 32-13-0. The Sunday winner was Terry Fishgold who put 38lbs of carp and bream on the scales to lead Phil Hardman's carp-based 33lbs and James Declouet's 32-6-8.
Shaun Sandham was top rod in the Tarvin Sands AC Tuesday match at Cheshire Fishery, Tattenhall, with 49-14-0 of carp, well ahead of Sam Kennedy's 30lbs and David Lloyd's 17lbs of carp. The Thursday match went to Sam Hunt with 9-3-0 of roach from Winsford Flash. Sandham was second with 8-10-0 of skimmers and roach and Martin Holding third with 6-5-0.
Phil Stokes couldn't be caught in the Chester Police AC match at Hampton springs. His carp catch of 50lbs was well ahead of Mark Greasley's 38-12-0 of carp and chub with Neil Jukes third with 18-12-0 of carp.
John Mort was the winner of the Grosvenor Estates AC match on local stock ponds with 31lbs of carp. Norman Cadman was next with 29-8-0 and Brian Summerville third with 26-8-0.
FISHERIES NEWS Cheshire: James Robinson, of Upton, tempted a 14-8-0 common carp and other carp up to 8lbs using floating bread.
Forest Hill: Barry Preston, 13, of Chester, tempted a 2-7-12 rainbow to worm and Matthew Critchley, also of Chester, coaxed a 2-5-4 rainbow to worm.
Gweryd: Wayne Roberts, of Wirral, coaxed 13 carp to 15lbs using a trigger boilie.
Meadow: David Daniels, Heswall, lured a 4-8-0 rainbow to a whisky fly.
