ATHLETICS: JOHN Manning and Paul Bateson smashed three club records as they steered West Cheshire AC to promotion.
The duo led the Chester and Ellesmere Port-based club to victory in their Northern Track and Field League Division Three West match at Woodbank Park, Stockport.
The success against their promotion rivals cemented West Cheshire AC's place in Division Two next summer.
Manning claimed a new club record clearance of 3.10m in the pole vault to earn second spot overall, before producing another record with a long-jump victory of 6.60m to complete a clean sweep from all four rounds this year. He later achieved a triple-jump success of 11.21m.
He was joined by Bateson who secured first position in the B event with a new best of 6.43m, followed by a breathtaking club record clearance of 1.92m in the high jump. Andrew McKay sealed success with a 1.60m B event clearance.
In the 100m and 200m sprints, Stephen Butterfield clinched victories with times of 11.3 and 22.8 seconds respectively. Dave McKay secured maximum points in the 110m hurdles to clock a winning time of 18.4 seconds, despite breaking a barrier in the process. He then launched a winning 56.05m in the javelin, to seal a double success with brother Andrew who scored 43.84m.
In the 4x100m relay, the quartet of Butterfield, Mark Hearn, Manning and Bateson combined to earn their club second spot after posting 45.9 seconds.
Charlotte Roach secured a vital double success in the women's track races with a time of 2:21.8 in the 800m before sealing victory in the 1,500m with a time of 5:21.3, while Lauren Hunt and Amanda Gore teamed up to triumph in the discus with throws of 35.05m and 23.43m respectively. Amanda Scott claimed top spot in the B 100m hurdles in a time of 18.9 seconds. The day was rounded off with Heather McLintock (26.56m) and Trish Jackson (12.26m) cementing West Cheshire's success story in the javelin with two second places.
West Cheshire AC was also grateful to Sam Bateson, Steve Crowe, Andrew Clague, Gary Withers, David Molloy and Richard Stocker for their support at Stockport.

Entries are now being received for the Cheshire County Multi-Events Championships being held at Macclesfield on Sunday, September 11.
