SWIMMING: WINSFORD'S swimming starlets continued to accumulate medals at the Cheshire Championships at the weekend. They were in action in front of packed arenas at Macclesfield and Birkenhead, where they set three new county records on the way to five gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

Cuddington's Lucie Tetley completed the treble in the 14yrs breaststroke events, when she won both the 100m and 200m, to add to the 50m title she claimed last week.

She broke the record for this age group in the 100m, with a time of 1min 15.71, and took the 200m gold in 2:43.60.

Both of these times qualify her to enter the ASA National Youth Championships in August.

Another record fell to elder sister Abi Tetley, who was defending her title in the Open 50m butterfly. Having qualified second fastest for the final, she fought off all-comers and edged ahead, breaking the 30-second mark for the first time and lowering the county record to 29.67 secs.

Also in the record books is 13-year-old James Cowburn who took the 100m backstroke title in 64.38 secs.

He broke the record for this age group in his heat and then knocked another second off in the final.

Joining him on the podium was Ashley Walton, who won the bronze medal in 68.45 secs. Both swimmers' times were fast enough to qualify for the National Championships.

James was in action again in the 1,500m, winning the silver medal and again achieving a national qualifying time. Ashley also added a silver to his tally when he finished strongly in the 13yrs 100m individual medley event to set a new personal best and lower the club record to 69.55 secs.

Nigel Davies was also in good form in the 100m IM, achieving a PB to win bronze in the 15yrs category.

Terry Cowburn celebrated a gold medal in the 15yrs 200m backstroke, winning in 2:20.65 secs. He also swam well in the 100m butterfly, where he improved his PB in both heat and final to pick up the bronze medal.

Other notable performances came from Oliver Paver, who set new PBs to finish fourth and fifth in the 200 and 100m 15yrs backstroke; Kerry Harrison with a PB and fourth place in the 15yrs 100m IM, and George White (12) in the 100m IM, also fourth.

There were also personal-best performances from Suzanne Harrison in the 10yrs 100m IM, who finished fifth, and Emma Almond in the 14yrs 200m breaststroke. She was seventh.

The Individual Championships conclude next weekend, again held at Macclesfield and Birkenhead, with the Relay Championships at Stockport on March 27.
