ANGLING: A WINSFORD River Weaver match record was set on Wednesday and, you've guessed it, peg 200 was the winning spot, writes JOHN STUBBS.

The man lucky enough to draw the magic number was Kev Simpson and the Vale Royal AC rod took 56-14-0 of bream and skimmers over the next five hours using pole and ground bait with worm and maggot on the hook.

But it wasn't all good luck for Simpson - he also tripped over his own equipment and fell in!

Simpson, who won the Northwich Open four days earlier, was the winner - Maurice German (Stapeley AC) had 17-9-0, Ron Weedall (Winsford AA) 12-5-0 and Ian Shaw (Barlows) 11-12-0.

Andy Hamlett (Glow Worms), pegged on the Red Lion length, took 18-4-0 of skimmers to win the Winsford Winter League match on Sunday. Placed were Steve Lakin (Meadow Bank B) 12-15-0, Terry Kettle (Farmers Arms) and Ian Shaw (Barlows) both 11-8-0, Alex Walton (Meadow Bank B) 11-0-0 and Mark Rogerson (Last Cast Blue) 8-15-0. All six had bags of bream and skim-mers.

Winners on the day were Meadow Bank Jnrs 78pts from Meadow Bank B 76 and Barlows 68.

Overall positions, with one match remaining: Edgeley Sport 373, Last Cast Red 349, Glow Worms 331, Barlows 322, Meadow Bank Jnrs 321.

Northwich AA's Saturday Open was won on peg one by Newton-le-Willows match-man John Ormason 3-10-0, who beat Shaw 3-4-0, Simpson 2-14-8 and Bob Meggs (Dave's of Middlewich) 2-4-0.
