RUNNING: RAIN could not deter almost 150 runners taking part in South Cheshire Harriers' 20-mile road race on Sunday.

Lee Reynolds of Staffordshire Moorland AC won the race, which started and finished at Shavington Sports Centre and took place on the surrounding country roads, in a terrific one hour, 59 minutes, 17 seconds.

Harrier Peter Mallison was in second place in 2:03.39 followed by team-mate David Jones (2:04.05), and Colin Wynne came home in 2:48.27. Julia Myatt from Newcastle AC won the ladies race in 2:25.01.

A Harriers spokeswoman said: 'We would like to thank our sponsors Bombardier Transportation for supporting the event.'

Meanwhile, nine Harriers attended the Gatehouse Clayton 10-kilometres road race in Newcastle last week. Jones ran a superb race, finishing in 13th place with a personal best time of 35 minutes 32 seconds.

Mike Hatton (35:45), Peter Mallison (37:01), Mike Cutler (44:42), Martin Stirna (47:02), Colin Earp (47:21), Gale Earp (52:47), Cindy Morrissette (58:15) and Joy Cartlidge (59:41) also competed well.

Harriers Jason Dix (42:25) and Stella Anderson (55:25) took part in the East Manchester B of the Bang 10k Run, while improving Sheila Bickerton ran the Bird Rock Half Marathon at Tywyn in Mid-Wales, in 1 hour 35 minutes. Mike Cutler kept up his form by running in the Mayors 8k Charity Race, at Whitegate Way, Winsford; the Night and Day 10-mile Road Race at Knighton, Newport; and the Waterloo 15k Race at Crosby recently.
