SWIMMING: FOUR Winsford ASC swimmers contest national championships over the next two weekends.

First to go to Pond's Forge, Sheffield, are Ashley Walton and James Cowburn for the Age Group Championships.

The two are both 13 and Middlewichbased Ashley is contesting the 100m and 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke.

James is more prolific. A member of the British world-class start programme, James is entered into an incredible nine events - 100m, 200m, 400m and 1,500m freestyle; 100m, 200m back; 200m, 400m individual medley and 100m butterfly.

It is unlikely James will attempt all nine events, especially as each will need qualifying heats and semi-finals.

He is a backstroke specialist and those events carry his best hopes of a medal.

Next weekend, sisters Abi and Lucie Tetley contest the Youth Championships.

Abi, 17, a Sir John Deane's College student, swims in the 50m and 100m freestyle and the 100m butterfly.

Lucie, 15 and at the younger end of her age group, is among the large entries for 100 and 200m breaststroke.

Winsford coach Dave Pettengell, one of the most respected in the country, says he is delighted that four swimmers have made it to the finals.

Added spokesman Janet Tetley: 'For such a small club, it is already an achievement.'
