Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr's withdrawal from this weekend's show in Liverpool means Chester's Paul Economides will now take centre stage.

Former four-weight world champion Jones was due to fight at Aintree Equestrian Centre on Saturday against Liverpudlian Tony Moran.

But the decision was made to pull the boxing superstar out of the clash after he failed to show up at the airport for his flight to the UK.

Jones has been in Russia in recent weeks where he met president Vladimir Putin and asked for Russian citizenship. He has also been training two Russian fighters and there have been reports of a possible title fight in Moscow.

VB Promotions, who were hosting the Aintree show, have been told that the 46-year-old has secured a world title shot.

Promoter Stephen Vaughan has now moved the show - minus the main event - to the Olympia in Liverpool on the same night with Economides topping the bill.

The Vicars Cross fighter faces Ghana's Prosper Ankrah for the WBF Intercontinental super-bantamweight title on a 16-fight card.

Economides has stopped his last four opponents and easily dispatched Czech fighter Petr Gyna in the first round back in May at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

"I’m extremely disappointed and saddened by the whole thing," said ex-Chester City owner Vaughan.

"We had invested a lot of money and time into this event, as we wanted to make it a great occasion for the fans and the game alike.

"But sadly, it wasn’t to be and legal advice is to be sought surrounding the circumstances in which it has happened."

Tickets for 'The Show Must Go On' are priced at £40 (balcony), £60 (floor) and £75 (ringside). For details contact Chester Boxers on 01244 342012 or Economides on Twitter @PaulEconomides.
