RUNNING: Crewe's Stevie Stockton was a victim of her own high standards at the National Cross-Country Championships on Saturday.

The Coppenhall runner came 21st in the U17s girls race at Parliament Hill Fields, London, but was disappointed despite a decent performance.

Her race, clocking 21:54 for 5,000m, helped the Vale Royal AC girls U17s team finish a super fourth overall.

Coach Shaun McGrath explained: 'To come 21st is a great achievement, but I don't think Stevie feels that way about it.

'She did have a bit of an off day by her standards and she is used to finishing at least top 10 in whatever race she competes.'

Vale Royal's Hannah Weedall, from Winsford, beat Stevie for the first time, finishing 10th.

South Cheshire girls Rachel Clews (70th) and Lorna Timms (119th) completed the U17 girls team. Zach Cross (U17 boys), Emily Furbur (U15 girls) and Andrew Clews (U15 boys) also took part.

Meanwhile, Mike Cutler was the only South Cheshire Harrier in action over the weekend. He took part in the Radcliffe 12m trail race in North Manchester, finishing 118th out of 250 in 1:44:50.
