NICK MacDonald produced another classy display to win his National Championships quarter-final against the Eastern Counties Champion in Suffolk.

The 20-year-old progressed to Friday's semis in Preston with a comfortable 16-2 points win against Great Yarmouth's Ryan Walsh at Lowestoft's Ocean Rooms.

He now has to wait for the semi-final draw later this week to see who he will fight on Friday night at Preston Guild Hall.

The 54kg category boxer has reached the national stages after he was crowned North West Counties Champion in the Senior ABA Championship last week.

His delighted coach, Peter Phelan, said of his victory in Suffolk: 'It was a convincing win where he controlled a difficult fight from the word go against the Eastern Counties Champion who was fighting on his home turf.

'He showed real maturity and experience to overcome both his opponent and the crowd who were really behind their man.'

And Phelan now has high hopes for his protege, who is ranked number one in the country for his weight.

'He's the best I have ever coached and at this moment in time he is training hard with a good mindset which explains his top ranking,' he added.

The Vauxhall Motors ABC boxer is looking to gain more experience with his first aim being to win the nationals and continue to train hard with a view to then qualifying for the Four Nations boxing event and the prestigious World Championships.
