GOLF: A SECOND-ROUND 62 clinched victory for John Stockton in the Captain's Prize at Widnes Golf Club.

Added to a score of 64 for the first 18 holes, it handed 16-handicapper Stockton a 126 nett total for the two rounds and victory on a card play-off from runner-up Paul Sherman, who also scored 126 with two rounds of 63 off a 12 handicap.

Two shots behind with rounds of 64 and 65 for a 129 was Steve Sunderland, the Highfield Road club's president whose handicap is 16.

Sunderland beat 12-handicapper Billy Fox (63+66=129) on countback.

The best gross was Peter Blatherwick's 145 (73+72) off five.

Brian Murnane (76-14=62) posted the top Saturday round with the Sunday best being John Mawer's 77-11=66.

Frank Alcock (21) took the seniors prize with 70+66=136.

* KEITH Darlington was determined not to be in the shadows too long after his 14-year-old son, Lloyd had stolen the limelight by co-winning Frodsham Golf Club's Flanagan Trophy.

Division One victory for Keith in the July Medal made it a notable family double.

Nine-handicapper Keith produced a three-over-par gross 73 for a nett 64 and a three-shot victory over Julian Nield (71-4=67).

Dennis Cheetham (82-15=67) won Division Two with Alan Paynter the runner-up with 81-13=68.

Junior member David Murray, who is quickly reducing his handicap, was a convincing five-shot winner in Division Three.

Playing off 17, he netted 63 with Ron Jones his nearest challenger with 86-18=68.

The Division Four winner was Jill Thorburn (94-30=64) with second spot going to Ann Freakes (91-24=67).

Lloyd Darlington had been partnered to victory in the Flanagan Trophy, a Two Ball Texas Scramble, by Dave Reid.

They scored numerous birdies on the way to 62-2.75=59.25, edging out runners-up John Millar & Gabrielle Lanceley (69-8.5=60.5), Dave & Jill Thorburn (70=8.5=61.5) in third and fourth-placed Stuart Gould & Jamie Robertson (66-4=62).
