A Chester student is celebrating after being selected for the Welsh under 19 netball squad.

Abbey Gate College head girl, Evie Brereton, 19, has been  selected as goal defence/goalkeeper, for the 12-strong squad following an intensive week of training and match play at the Welsh Institute of Cardiff in January.

Evie, from Kelsall,  more than held her own as she pitted her talents against star players such as Timmy Cato from Celtic Dragons and Cat Lata, the New Zealand goal shooter.

The talented teenager will take her place in the squad for the Netball Europe Championships in April, with the Ireland playing host  to this years competition.

Gavin Allmand, deputy head at Abbey Gate College, said: “We are tremendously proud of Evie and what she has achieved.

“She is a fantastic talent who is extremely modest about her achievements. We’re thrilled for her.”

Evie has previously represented the Welsh U17 squad and in 2012 and 2013 won silver medals at competitions in Glasgow and in Malta.

She is currently working to complete her A-Levels in geography, biology and business studies and hopes to go to university in September to study sports management.
