HOWIE Mainwaring enjoyed a successful weekend at Oulton Park after finally solving the brake problem which has plagued his season.
The Frodsham flyer, 22, crashed out in his first race in the Metzeler Superstock 1,000cc Championship, finishing 21st.
But the incident led to Mainwaring’s team finally identifying a long-standing problem.
“Not enough air was getting to the brakes to cool them,” he said.
“We remedied the problem and when I went out for the second race it was a hell of a lot better. I pushed as hard as I could.”
Mainwaring finished up fifth in his second race.
He added: “After fixing the problem, I entered the second British Superbike race to get extra track time and only didn’t finish because we ran out of fuel!”
When he ran dry, Mainwaring was only eight seconds off the front-runner and winner Tom Sykes, who held off Cal Crutchlow to win both Superbike races.
Tomorrow and Sunday the action swaps from two wheels to four at Oulton Park as the British Touring Car Championship returns to the Cheshire circuit.
Tickets are only available on the gate, priced £28 for adults. Accompanied children get in free.
