BOXING: VAUXHALL Motors ABC fell foul of a controversial judging decision again as Buster Exell was beaten by Callum Smith, of Rotunda ABC, in the National Schoolboy Championships.
Buster was competing in the Class Three 48kg section, at Everton Park, but Vauxhall officials were convinced that he had comfortably secured victory and were left stunned by his reversal.
Coach Peter Phelan said: 'I was there myself but George Treble was in Buster's corner and he assures me there was no way on this earth that we lost. He told me that Buster won the first round easily and while the second was closer, the third was definitely ours. We've had half a dozen phone calls from people in Liverpool and they also said there's no way he lost.'
In the National Senior Championships, Nick Mac-Donald will box for the Merseyside 54kg title on Friday, February 11, against the winner of Rotunda's Steven Smith and John Donnelly of Croxteth.
New Vauxhall recruit Eddie Sarsfield, 25, has been selected to represent a West Lancashire/Cheshire squad in a team exhibition tournament in Bahrain.
The heavyweight will jet out to the Middle East on Friday, February 18, and is expected to face an opponent from Ireland.
