MAURICE Hambleton cut short his rivals' Abel Cup ambitions in the Runcorn & District Carlsberg-Tetley Association.
The Egerton A player produced a superb display throughout finals night at Subscription on Thursday.
But it was in the final itself Hambleton really made his mark with a 21-6 defeat of Grapes B player Les Harrington.
Harrington didn't play at all badly but couldn't knock Hambleton out of his groove as he battered the jack with an unstoppable short game.
Harrington, who had done well to beat his team-mate Bob Johnston in the semi-final, would have preferred to take the final into the corners but seldom got chance.
All but one of the last-eight ties had been close, with two being decided by an odd chalk.
The other semi-final loser was Chris Price, who went out 21-15 to the eventual winner.
League secretary Pat Crowe congratulated all the contenders on their efforts and also the host club for use of their facilities. nOn the league scene, Beryl Burton (Pavilions C) and Joan Horrocks (Rock Park B) gained 21-0 whitewash wins.
