STUDENTS from a tae kwon-do club showed plenty of fighting spirit as they bagged an impressive array of medals at a regional competition.

The Wirral and Chester Tae Kwon-do Academy took a 17-strong team to Hereford for the South Midlands Championships.

All the students did exceptionally and the club won a total of eight gold medals, four silver and two bronze.

Nathan Saunders, 11, and 13-year-old Anna Williams became grand champions after winning the patterns division and then competing against all the other winners to claim the top prize.

The club’s other trophy winners were Jai Drury, Richard Jones, Sean Williams, Brian Anderton, Faye Ainsworth, James Welsh, Connor Ainsworth, Mike Orford and Mia Gerrard.

Instructor Richard Saunders said: “It was our first tournament of 2013 and I was so pleased with everyone’s performance on the day. Nathan and Anna were fantastic and it shows that the level of tae kwon-do we have – in both junior boys and girls, and at black belt level – is second to none.”

The club meets at the Northgate Arena on Thursdays and Sundays and in Hoole on Tuesdays. For further information, call 0151 378 5256 or visit www.chestertkd.co.uk.
