HOCKEY: A HASLINGTON man will fly out to Portugal next week aiming to help Wales win hockey's version of Euro 2004.
Mark Bateman, an assistant PE teacher at Sandbach School, is bid-ding to help the Welsh U21s team triumph in the European Junior Hockey Championships in Lousada.
Mark, who plays his club hockey with English League Division One side Bowdon, will be looking to play his part in helping Wales improve on the fifth spot they secured in last year's championships.
The team warmed up for the event with the triangular Celtic Cup tournament against France and Scotland in Aberdeen earlier this month.
Wales have been grouped in Pool B along with Switzerland, France and Portugal.
They start against the French on July 25, take on Switzerland the following day and complete their group games against the host nation on July 28.
Mark started his hockey career at Sandbach School and went on to captain the first team as well as representing Cheshire and the North West.
He currently coaches teams at Sandbach School, Sandbach Girls High School and has previously coached teams from Crewe and Congleton for the Cheshire Youth Games.
