CITY of Chester Swimming Club sent 55 competitors to the first two weekends of the Cheshire County Championship in Macclesfield and Stockport.

The large number of entrants reflected the success of the club at achieving the necessary county entry times.

Having qualified, the Chester swimmers set about making the North West region qualifying times (NWRQTs) with some registering national qualifying times (NQTs).

Lucy Worrall set the standard, the 15-year-old not only taking gold and swimming an NQT in the 200m freestyle, but breaking the championship record which had stood for 18 years.

Sarah Eaglesham, 14, also had significant successes, reaching six NQTs and one NWRQT while claiming gold in all her events - 100m, 200m and 800m freestyle, 100m and 200m backstroke, 400m individual medley and 200m fly.

For the boys, the top performer was 14-year-old Tom Allen, who made three NQTs in the 400m freestyle, 400m individual medley, where he set a new championship record, and 200m fly as well as NWRQTs in the 100m freestyle and 100m fly.

The oldest competitor, 18-year-old Siân Roberts, successfully achieved NWRQTs in the 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke, while Gill Bentley took gold in the 1500m freestyle for the 16-year-old group.

In the same group, Gemma Clethro took 100m fly gold on her way to NWRQTs in that event and the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle.

Hannah Oldfield took six NWRQTs in the 15-year-old group, qualifying in the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle and the 100m and 200m backstroke, collecting four golds and two silvers in the process.

Another Hannah, 14-year-old Hannah Phillips, achieved seven qualifying times as she won the 100m and 200m breaststroke and the 100m fly, and made the county standard in the 100m, 200m and 400m free and the 400m individual medley.
