WIDNES Rugby League legend Ray Dut -ton has passed out as a bowls instructor.

Record club goalscorer with 1,072 goals in 398 appearances and man-ofthe-match in the then Chemics' 1975 Challenge Cup-winning team, Dutton is also now renowned in the town for his darts and snooker skills.

He is just starting his fourth season of playing bowls after starting out with the Widnes RL Past Players' Association team.

True to form, he is now proving a hit with Moorfield Sports and Social Club's teams in the Widnes Association and Newton-le-Willows League.

The group of five new instructors, who qualified through a British Crown Green Coaching Scheme course at the Moor-field club, also included another ex-Widnes rugby player Ron Heyes.

Other successful candidates receiving their badges and certificates were Elaine Quirk, Ian Argent and Les Williams.

The course was run by Ian Thompson, area head coach, assisted by Moorfield Juniors Bowls official Joe Argent, another ex-Naughton Park man.
