THE Mid Cheshire League is to return to the national scene.

The crown green players are joining the Federation National League and will start in Division Four of the six-division competition.

Wharton Cons bowler Gary Cookson has been appointed acting manager.

He said: 'The Federation has been going for about five years and was a breakaway from the Parks competition, which we used to enter and had won.

'We withdrew for various reasons, not least to see whether the Federation took off. It did and we have got a hunger to play representative bowls again.

'They made a judgment on who would be playing for us and where to put us and it's a fair starting point.'

The league operates on Sundays and is a 12-a-side home and away competition.

Cookson added: 'The Mid Cheshire League has 1,800 registered players so we have no problem getting a team and there is plenty of support among the top players. Indeed, we nearly entered a side last year.

'But we are hoping to give players with potential to be big names the chance to play representative bowls.'

A meeting of clubs has been called for tomorrow (Thursday) at 8pm at Wharton Cons to update clubs and to agree on selection policy, appoint a manager and captains and discuss sponsorship and other issues.
