WORK is under way on an £80,000 sports facility in Ellesmere Port.

The project has been funded by Barclays Spaces for Sports as part of a three-year, £30m community sponsorship programme which will create and improve sports facilities across the country.

The facility, which will be built at Seacombe Drive playing fields in Great Sutton, will hold a multi-use games area and will supply coaching kit and equipment.

Local residents have already backed the scheme and they are currently working with environmental charity Groundwork Wirral to help create the new site.

Michelle Smith, Barclays head of community sponsorship, said: 'Barclays Spaces for Sports will create hundreds of new sports sites up and down the country.

'Our aim is to have a significant and long-lasting impact on local communities and grassroots sport throughout the UK for many years to come.'

Project manager Isabelle Gascoigne, of Groundwork Wirral, said: 'Our experience shows that people really value the opportunity to have a say in improving their neighbourhoods and make them better places to live, work and play.

'Getting involved in these projects gives people confidence and makes us all feel proud of where we live.'
