TERRY Kettle and Steve Mitchell were the Winsford Flash Open winners at the weekend, writes JOHN STUBBS.

Kettle (Vale Royal AC) took Saturday's contest from peg 32 with 9-4-0, beating Dave Whelton (Bolton) 8-11-0 and Sam Pendlebury (Leigh) 5-5-0.

Dave's of Middlewich rod Mitchell beat 30 other contenders and there was a general improvement in the fishing.

He drew peg 61 and took 18-8-0 of skim-mers and bream with Kev Simpson 10-10-0, Ian Bellfield 8-8-0 and Frank Slater 6-4-0 making up the frame.

The Winsford Veterans' new series at Border Fisheries suffered from icy conditions and a biting northerly wind.

Harold Jones kept warmest - or at least busiest - with a winning 36-4-0 and was followed by Alan Thompson 32-8-0 and Brian Sproston and Kevin Storey both 25-0-0.

Section winners were Ernie Ayers, John Dickens and Doug Maddock.
