SWIMMING: KATIE Holmes triumphed in this year's Northern Counties Youth Championships at the second time of asking.

The 14-year-old won the 100m breaststroke title for the 14 to 15-years age group after setting club-record times in the heats and semi-finals.

The breaststroke star just missed the medals in the 200m event, finishing fourth at Manchester Aquatics Centre.

This made her even more determined to come away with something in the 100m.

Katie forced the pace from the start and dominated her age group throughout.

The new format of heats, semi-finals and finals proved difficult but Halton coped well.

They placed two swimmers in the 50m freestyle final.

Stephanie Mahoney shot away to a great start but team-mate Sarah-Louise Banner came through in the final 25m. Stephanie took silver in the 16 to 17-years while Sarah Louise captured bronze in the 14-15.

Lucy Myler finished in 62 seconds in the 100m freestyle and earned a great bronze medal for her efforts.
