RUNNING: South Cheshire Harriers are hosting an open cross country event at Wistaston on Saturday.

The club has organised separate races for men and women at the Joey the Swan Fields. Both start at the Wistaston Sports Ground, known as the Brittles, off Church Lane.

The women's 4.5mile race starts at 1.30pm, while the men's six-mile challenge gets under way at 2.45pm. Entry fees are £4 for those affiliated to a club, £5 for others. Runners can enter on the day for an extra £1.

Changing, toilet facilities, parking and refreshments will be available. Prizes are on offer for the first three men, first three ladies, team winners and veteran runners.

Harriers spokesman Mike Cutler said: 'It should be a super event and I hope all keen runners come along and take part.'

Participants at the event, sponsored by Milcon Construction, are advised to wear studs or spikes to combat the tricky, soft terrain.

To enter, visit www.southcheshireharriers.org.uk, write to race secretary Robert Brown at 45 Oakhurst Drive, Wistaston, Crewe, CW2 6UE (include sae), or call 01270 569656. n Harriers' Sheila Bickerton, Gael Earp and Cindy Morissette notched an impressive second place in the women's team event at the Nick Beer 10km road race at Llandudno on Sunday.

Poor weather conditions made the going tough for the 413 competitors, but the trio put on an outstanding display to finish just behind Abergele.

The men's team came 16th overall, ahead of rivals West Cheshire AC and Newcastle AC. They were David Mc-Grath, Mike Cutler, Robert Bonson, Martin Stirna and Colin Earp.

Cutler had competed in the Parbold Hill Race near Ormskirk on Saturday. He finished 237th out of 331 over the seven-mile course, in 70 minutes.
