James Travers from Bristol & District Triathletes claimed first place at the 2015 Deva Triathlon, finishing almost 90 seconds clear of the field.

Travers, who will represent Guernsey at the Island Games in Jersey later this month, completed the Olympic distance race in 1:53:41.

Hannah Lord, who finished third 12 months ago, demonstrated her improvement to take top spot in the women's race, shaving 10 minutes off her 2014 time as she came home in 2:05:47.

Alex Lawton was the second-fastest male as the TORQ team athlete finished in 1:55:08 and RedVenom's Oliver Milk took third in 1:55:29.

Second-fastest female was Edinburgh University Triathlon Club's Alice Jenkins in 2:09:42 with Imogen Simmonds from Imperial College Triathlon Club next quickest in 2:10:43.

Some 1,100 competitors raced through Chester on Sunday with spectators lining sections of the route to cheer them on.

Starting with a 1500m swim in the River Dee before a 40km bike out into Wales via Eccleston, Rossett and Borras and back into Chester via Alford and Boughton, the race finished with a 10km run incorporating the Old Dee Bridge, the Queen's Park Suspension Bridge, the Meadows and the Groves.

Overall winner Travers completed the swim in 18:46, the cycle in 57:25 and the run in 35:43.

There was a large turnout from City of Chester Triathlon Club , including BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin, who described her first experience of the race as ‘amazing’ .

Scott Whittlestone was the quickest male from Chester in 2:05:26 and Claire Sutcliffe was the fastest female in a time of 2:25:32.

It was an emotional day for the host club as member Alan Cronin was killed a few days earlier in a collision while on his bike on the A483 near Rossett.

Chester Triathlon Club chairman Andy Hamilton was close to tears as he paid tribute to Mr Cronin , describing how the loss of the 60-year-old had affected those who knew him.

Following the presentation of the medals, the crowd stood and applauded Mr Cronin, who lived in Guilden Sutton .

Deva Triathlon has grown to become one of the most popular triathlons in the UK and this was the 17th renewal of the event.

The race was part of the Triathlon England National Championships and a qualifying event for the 2015 Chicago ITU Standard Distance Triathlon World Championships and 2016 Lisbon ETU Standard Distance Triathlon European Championships.
