HOWIE Mainwaring moved up to ninth place in the British Superstock Championships at Thruxton on Saturday.
He had just two days to set up his newly delivered MV Augusta and get up to speed. He qualified in 14th place, as he had done in the opening round at Brands Hatch.
The former Verdin High School, Winsford, pupil set off in determined mood and picked off riders to get up to the top five.
He settled into a good rhythm behind former BSB Superbike rider Glen Richards, Steve Brogan and the former South African champion Hudson Kennaugh. He held off several challenges from former champion Lee Jackson to finished fourth and pick up 13 points.
* With the return of the British Superbikes just a fortnight away, Oulton Park's two-wheeled season kicks off on Saturday with 16 Wirral 100 Club races featuring more than 300 riders.
Northwich's own Gary Watts, the 2005 Champion of Oulton, is among the starters.
The last time Watts raced was a one-off entry in the British Superbike Championship, his prize for taking the Champion of Oulton title in September 2005.
He's had a year away from racing, but said: 'I think I'll still be competitive. I've done three trackdays at Oulton and I'm on the ball.'
Tickets are £12 on the gate, children free.
