HOWIE Mainwaring had a weekend to remember at Oulton Park.

The former Verdin High School pupil constantly lowered his best times during racing and came away with a brace of second placings in the British Superbike Privateers event.

In only the third outing on his Mark Johns-backed machine, with which he is now getting more familiar, he continued his recent improvements.

After the races had finished he said: 'I gave it my all out there today. I am getting more used to the bike and how it handles coming out of the corners. I can give it more throttle now and the bike is under control whereas before I had to be more gentle when giving the machine more power as it came in with a bang.'

Mainwaring, son of former Weaverham superbike rider Steve Mainwaring, knocked a second of his best time and is out again at Croft next month.

He added: 'I do have a wild card ride in the World Superbikes Series when they return to the UK in the 1000cc.

Mainwaring also gained a ninth place during the National Super-stock Championship race aboard the Krystal Racing/Space Air backed Yamaha, after a hard-fought battle with John McGuinness.
