DEESIDE Ramblers fell at the final hurdle in their bid to become national under 18s champions.
They travelled to Beeston in Nottinghamshire on Sunday for the National Plate finals.
Ramblers defeated reigning champions Eastbourne in the semi-finals, securing a place in the final against Taunton thanks to some excellent defensive play from Matt Harle and John Helm.
The tiring Deeside team found themselves 2-0 down by half-time in the final. Captain Martyn Lear pulled one back to set up a thrilling last 10 minutes, but Taunton held on for the victory.
Ramblers’ U12s claimed a memorable victory in the Cheshire seven-a-side Championships on Sunday.
They enjoyed an almost flawless campaign to earn the title of Cheshire champions by beating Timperley 8-0, drawing 1-1 with Alderley Edge, seeing off Triton 7-0 and brushing aside Neston 10-1 in the semi-final.
A testing final against Oxton saw the Ramblers emerge triumphant 4-0.
Matt Steventon, of Bunbury, was the Ramblers’ leading scorer with 11 goals, followed by William Dodd-Moore from Dodleston, who scored eight.
The Ramblers will now go forward to represent Cheshire in the Northern finals in Leeds next month.
