MATTHEW Langridge followed a major team disappointment with personal acclaim.

The 23-year-old Olympics oarsman is currently stroke in the Great Britain eight who finished fifth in the World Cup meet at Munich.

It was a poor result by GB standards and the crew were given time off to let the dust settle, enabling Langridge, of London Road, to attend a day at the Northwich Regatta.

But if he was disheartened he was soon given a vote of confidence of the highest order.

Rowing legend Steve Redgrave, being interviewed on television, specifically mentioned Langridge as 'one to look out for'.

'It was completely unprompted and delighted everyone at Northwich, though it embarrassed Matthew, who is rather modest,' said Northwich Rowing Club official Kevin Jump.

Langridge recently outstripped the rest of the British squad on ergometer tests and is now back in training for the next World Cup fixture, in Poznan on June 17.

At the end of the month his GB crew will contest the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley, and then continue preparations for the World Championships, to be in held in Britain for the first time in 20 years, at Dorney Lake in August.

But Langridge's ambitions to single scull for his country took a setback when team-mate Alex Campbell won the event in Munich and is now a likely automatic choice for the boat.

Northwich, meanwhile, will also have three crews at Henley - a coxless four and quad and a junior quad comprising the promising foursome Edward and John Ford, Kerster Reid and Ronan Lomas, who are also at Marlow Regatta at the weekend.

Northwich winners at their regatta were:
