ATHLETICS: YOUNG athletes in the borough have a role model they can really look up to.

Double Commonwealth high-jump champion Milton Ottey has cleared 2.33 metres - higher than the average living room door.

The Canadian visited Halton and Frodsham Harriers as part of a tour of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Milton is the cousin of Jamaican sprinter Merlene Ottey, the Olympic and world medallist.

Peter Allen, from the Harriers, said: 'He has been looking at how Sportshall Athletics is organised to help him in his efforts to run the sport for young athletes in his hometown.'

Frodsham was a fitting destination as the indoor version of the sport was initiated by Harriers legend George Bunner, who lives in the town.

Ottey held a question-and-answer session with the club members at Frodsham Sports Centre.

He also presented awards to the Under 11s who did so well as part of the Cheshire team in the Norwich Union Fun in Athletics Festival at Wigan.

Claire Perry, Danielle Wood, Erin Sykes and Sophia Smith were in the girls' team which won the regional competition for the first time while the third-placed boys included H&FH's Matthew Gabbott and Luke Dawson.

Some of the older club members competed in the Reebok Cross Challenge in Sefton Park, Liverpool. In the U15 girls' event, over 3km, Rheannon Rainford came 30th in 11:08 and Kirsty Young 60th in 12:34.

Emma Baldwin made her Harriers' debut in the U17 ladies' event, over 4km, and did well to finish 40th in 19:18.

On Bank Holiday Tuesday, December 28 the Harriers will be involved in the first round of the Cheshire Cross Country League at Castle Park, Frodsham.

There are races for all age groups - from U11s through to open age, both men and women, starting at 11.30am.
