HOCKEY: ELLESMERE Port Ladies went down 2-0 to a strong Chester thirds outfit in Saturday's league encounter at Sutton Sports Centre.
The visitors dominated the first half and forced Port goalkeeper Jo Heydon into a number of excellent point-blank saves, but she couldn't prevent Chester taking a 1-0 lead into the interval.
After the break, Port were able to use their possession to better effect with Rebecca Jaques' pace up front causing Chester problems.
The home side's best chance came when Jaques hit the post after a fine solo run, while Heydon denied Chester on two more occasions before a Chester striker swept home a right-wing cross to make the final score 2-0. Ellesmere Port's next game is away to league lead-ers Northop Hall on Saturday.
In men's action, Bebington had a diabolical start against bottom club Cheetham/Hey-wood and fell 2-0 down early on.
A substitution led to a change in tactics, and goals from Mark Wilkie from a short corner and an Alex Bailey strike put them level at half-time.
After the break, Bebington sewed up the points with Wilkie completing his hat-trick and Bailey bagging his brace.
The seconds also tackled their Cheetham/Heywood counterparts and found themselves 1-0 down after a slow start.
Steve Price levelled proceedings after some neat inter-passing with Dennis Gregory and Paul Seymour put Bebington ahead early in the second half.
Bebington were again pegged back and despite Steve Price restoring their lead, they went down to two soft goals in the last five minutes.
The thirds defeated a physical Warrington thirds side 3-2 in a game that was more like a war than hockey. Goals from Will Spencer and Huw Jones (2) secured the victory.
Bebington fourths' trip to Northop Hall was snowed off while the fifths were beaten 6-2 by Wilmslow seconds, with efforts from Neal Tolley and Dave Watson.
The sixth team returned to winning ways with a 2-1 success over Warrington fourths, with Mat Knight grabbing the goals.
