SPRINTER Hayley Jones is hungry for more life in the fast lane after racing in a final at the IAAF World Junior Championships in China.

The 17-year-old, from Stapeley, was part of the Great Britain 4x100m team which clocked the fourth fastest time ever for a GB junior girls relay team, in Beijing.

Although Hayley, and team-mates Elaine O'Neill, Lucy Sargent and Asha Philip, failed to reproduce the red-hot 44:33 they managed in the heats, they still finished a creditable sixth in 44:72 in the final on Sunday. The experience has left the South Cheshire College student hungry for more.

Hayley, who ran the second leg, said: 'We were a bit disappointed because we were the third fastest team in qualifying and were hoping for a medal. The baton changes let us down in the final.

'But we did well and it was a great experience. It was good to run in front of a packed stadium, and we were all later stopped for photographs and to sign autographs.

'I have learnt a lot about what it is like to be abroad with the team and the preparation that goes into an event of that size, and I really want to do it again.

'It was always going to be a learning curve. Now I want to be in an individual event at the European Junior Championships in Holland next year.'

Hayley, who runs for Wigan AC, is top of the UK rankings at 100m, 200m and 400m this season, but will now take a short break before winter training gets under way.

Meanwhile, Elworth's Rob Blake, celebrated his new sponsorship deal with Cranage-based firm Dayinsure.com by winning gold in the 100m and 200m at the Warrington Open meet, and silver in the shot putt.
