MOTOR SPORT: AT THE core of the Thundersprint at Northwich on Saturday were the races themselves and Mid Cheshire had a number of entrants.

Not least was organiser Frank Melling on a 900 Motor Martin, who had the satisfaction of beating former World Number One Jim Redman (750 CR Honda) in the Masterclass, though both trailed winner Malc Wheeler (496 Seeley).

Middlewich-based Peter Whitelegg was also a runner-up in the Motorcyling Personalties class. He rode a 998 Cagiva Raptor and was beaten only by Tristan Palmer, by 0.65 seconds.

Barntonian David Fox rode his 500 Velocette to third place in the Golden Age Unlimited (pre 1958) event, behind Graham Towne (500 Tiger 100 Triumph) and Kevin Stewart (650BSA).

Meanwhile, former Witton Albion footballer Chris Chrimes, who lives at Comberbach, was fourth in the Lightweights on his 175BSA. Mike Johnson (200 Honda) won the class.

Geoff Lewis, of Northwich, was third in the sidecar race. Carrying Darren Parry in his 597 Norton Dominator, he was pipped to second by Graham Hilditch, of Kingsley. Mike Guess (980 Morgan Jap) was the winner.
