ANDREW Palin stood down as Winnington Park men's third team captain having secured his 30th league win in charge - 1-0 at Neston South Wirral 5th - and leading his team to their best league finish since they won a title in 1998.

Mike Dodd and Will Eggleston both forced early saves from the Neston goalkeeper.

Park continued to dominate the game but, ironically, the opening goal arrived from a swift counter attack when Tom Hughes hit the ball 20 yards forward to Tim Boxall, who crossed for Mike Dodd to apply the finish and notch his first senior goal for the club.

Winnington finished third in the North West Division Eight South.

While all league hockey has now ended Park will be in action again at the Cheshire Veterans tournament at Timperley on Sunday week.
