BOXING: CHESTER ABC's Chris Goodwin has a great future in amateur boxing if his latest contest is anything to go by.

Goodwin earned a unanimous decision over experienced Swansea fighter Lee Owen on a bill at the Nova Centre, Prestatyn, North Wales, last Friday.

And the Chester prospect doubled up by winning the Best Boxer of the Night award following a thrilling seven-bout card hosted by Rhyl's Clwyd ABC.

Goodwin really looked the part in what was on paper a difficult youth match-up against Owen from the Blaen-y-Maes club.

From the off the Chester boxer was on fire, mixing well to head and body in the first round with some fierce blows.

It was more of the same in the second with Goodwin the more purposeful and determined while Owen was content to pick his shots and box at his own pace.

The third saw the confident Goodwin introduce switch-hitting and a flashy bolo punch into his armoury. His body shots were particularly severe and a lesser opponent than Owen would surely not have seen the final bell.

Fellow Chester fighter Paul Lovell looked unfortunate to lose his bout against Jobe Morris (Clwyd ABC) on a majority decision.

In the first Lovell landed a stiff right near a neutral corner and got through with a particularly firm jab, but the Welshman came back to take the second, buckling the Chester lad's right leg with a good left.

It was all to play for in the third, but the better work at close quarters from Morris as opposed to the flashy skills of Lovell won the Rhyl man the nod from the judges.
