AN amateur golfer has hit two hole-in-ones in the space of a week.

Ian Mathews, 43, achieved the remarkable feat at Vicars Cross Golf Club.

He hit his first ace on August 15 at the 138-yard 18th hole with a seven iron in a practice round.

Just to prove it was no fluke, he then hit his second the following Saturday (August 20) in a club competition.

It came on the par three 15th hole and Ian, a 17 handicapper, was using a three wood.

“To have one is amazing but two in the same week is unbelievable,” said Ian, who lives in Vicars Cross.

The golf fanatic has played at Vicars Cross GC since the early 1980s when he was a teenager.

He is so keen on golf that he manages to find the time to play every day.

Ian hit a hole in one a few years ago but did not ever expect to get two in a week.

To mark his achievement, the bar staff gave Ian a bottle of whisky but the golfer had to put his hand in his pocket as well, as is tradition.

“I bought everybody in the clubhouse a drink,” he said.

Current club captain Geoff Couchman congratulated his fellow member.

He said: “The news of Ian’s hole in ones is fantastic. On behalf of all the members, I would like to congratulate him.”
