A DEAF golfer is looking forward to making his international debut at the age of 41.

Ellesmere Port Golf Club member Peter Baker is celebrating being called into the England deaf squad for the World Deaf Championships in Perth, Australia, this September.

It will be a major step up in class for Peter, who has only previously played club golf.

Despite being born profoundly deaf and having to rely mainly on lip reading to understand what people are saying, Peter has not allowed it to hinder his sporting pursuits.

He represented Great Britain in the 1989 World Deaf Games – now known as the Deaflympics – in New Zealand, competing in the 400m, 4x400m and the 400m hurdles, where he came fourth.

He has also played football for Chester’s deaf team – but golf has always been his first love.

Partner Janet Power explained: “Peter was born in Ellesmere Port but he went to a special school for the deaf in Southport. The school overlooked Royal Birkdale Golf Club and, while he never got to play there, watching the players fostered a lifelong love of the game.”

Peter, who lives in Eastham, earned his England call-up after a chance meeting with the captain of the England deaf team on holiday.

“We were on a break in Whitstable and met Steve Earle, the England captain,” said Janet. “We chatted about golf and he invited Peter to join the team.”

In order to compete in Australia, Peter must raise £1,700 to pay for travel and accommodation.

“He has raised £500 already thanks to the generosity of Trade Frame, a company he does some work for,” said Janet. “Steve Lee of SFL Embroidery has also been kind, donating clothing for Peter to wear when playing.

“But he still needs a bit more help. It is very expensive for us. The cost is just for Peter, I will not be going. If anyone can offer any help we would be very grateful.”
