Ellesmere Port golfer Dave Waterhouse is toasting success after helping to retain the Fightmaster Cup in Scotland at the weekend.

Waterhouse, 56, was part of the European side that defeated America 21-7 on Saturday in the Ryder Cup-style competition for one-arm golfers.

Playing in his fourth Fightmaster Cup, Waterhouse, who lost his arm in a motorbike accident when he was 18, won two of his three matches, halving the other, to help the European side to victory at Stirling Golf Club.

“It was an absolutely outstanding team performance and we played superbly as a team,” said Waterhouse, who first became involved in the sport of one-armed golf back in 1992.

“The pairings for the competition were spot on all weekend and we won all eight of our foursome matches, which is a real achievement.

“I was pleased with how I performed myself. I got two-and-a-half points from my three games, but the Fightmaster Cup is all about the team, and we were excellent.

“It is immense pressure to deal with as you aren’t just trying to perform and do your best for yourself, you’ve got to do well for your team-mates because they are all counting on you to do your bit.

“It was a competition that was played in great spirit. The American guys were very gracious in defeat.

“We were confident going in to the competition but we were just too strong for them in the end and I’m so proud to have been a part of such a fantastic team.”

Waterhouse, a member of Upton-by-Chester Golf Club, was part of the European side that claimed glory at the Fighgtmaster Cup back in 2012 when it was held in Chicago.

He has been a familiar face on the circuit for more than 20 years, making his first appearance at the World Championships back in 1993.

Now, with another trophy to add to his collection, Waterhouse has set his sights on securing more glory over the next 12 months.

“The rest of the year will basically be about playing as much golf as I can and making sure that I go in to next year in good form,” he said.

“There is the Majorca Open to look forward to next year, so I want to be in good shape going in to that.”

Waterhouse praised Upton-by Chester Golf Club after they helped raise £1,200 to go towards the Fightmaster Cup.

“It costs about £25,000 to stage the Fightmaster Cup and Upton-by-Chester raised about £1,200 of that,” he said.

“Their support has been fantastic and I can’t thank them enough.”
