CARDEN Park duo Lesley Mifsud and Steve Aylott claimed victory in Egypt at the Sky Sports-televised Matchplay Championship – after paying just £20 to enter the competition.

After qualifying in the UK for the mixed pairs final, they were flown out to the Sinai peninsula on the banks of the Red Sea to take on the best of the rest of the entrants.

Steve, of Saughall, and Lesley, of Malpas, took home the title by just three points from their nearest challenger at the Marriott Taba Heights Beach Resort course.

Lesley said: “The course is beautiful, like an oasis in the middle of the desert, surrounded by stunning backdrops.

“And the third hole, across water, is the most difficult par-three I have ever played.”

The Matchplay Championship is one of Europe’s biggest amateur competitions with more than 1,150 teams from the UK and Ireland competing.

In all 16 teams, eight men’s and eight mixed pairs, qualify for the week-long trip.

Entries are now open for next year’s event and all the details are available online at: www.matchplaychampionship.co.uk
