A DUO from Carden Park Golf Club are closing in on a dream appearance at 2014 Ryder Cup venue Gleneagles.

Amateur David Savage and PGA professional Steven Priest are making promising progress in the Lombard Trophy, Europe’s biggest pro-am competition.

Savage teed up a chance to tread the fairways of Gleneagles in September when he won his club qualifying competition with a nett score of 70.

He and Priest now advance to the regional final at Dunham Forest Golf Club on Friday, July 5, where they will play one round of better-ball medal play with the chance to secure one of 16 spots available for the 36-hole grand final.

The tournament attracts more than 50,000 competitors from across Great Britain and Ireland and is now in its 29th competitive year.

The PGA National Pro-Am Championship has a total prize fund of £80,000, with the winning professional at the grand final taking home £12,000.

Savage has been playing golf for 22 years and plays off a handicap of 12. His interests apart from golf include triathlon and snooker.

Priest, 37, has been a professional at Carden Park for four years. He won the Eden Trophy in 1996 and 1997, when he was playing as an amateur.

Last year's winners were PGA professional Lee Rooke and amateur Nick Jones from the Vale of Llangollen.
