ATHLETICS: WEST CHESHIRE AC has enjoyed its most successful ever County Championships at the weekend as the club clinched a superb 27 gold medals at the two-day event in Macclesfield.
Chairman Dennis Wall said: 'We're overwhelmed by the success but it has to be attributed to our improved training facilities with our new Stanney track. The fact that we're using a state-of-the-art facility regularly has made all the difference and this is just going to be the tip of the iceberg. I can see us going on to many more successes, everyone is on a high now.'
Gareth Preston celebrated a hat-trick of victories, smashing the Cheshire record five times in the U15 boys' long jump, finishing on 5.97m, while also grabbing 200m and 100m wins.
Talented duo Stephanie Owens (U15 discus, 31.55m) and Sian Kelman (U15 long jump, 5.23m) were other WCAC members to attain grade one performances at the event
Stephanie spun the Under 15 girls' discus out to a winning mark of 31.55m, which was fractionally short of the county record distance of 32.76m, and also struck gold in the shot and 100m respectively.
Multiple gold medal winners included James Callaghan (U17s hammer 27.43m; discus 35.52m; shot 12.84m); Aiden Stoakley (U13s long jump 4.12m; 100m 14.16sec); Carl Van Schie (U17s pole vault 2.6m; high jump 1.61m; 400m hurdles 1:01.64); Danielle Bentley (U13s shot 6.69m; discus 18.89m); Abbi Kirk (U13s 75m 11.13sec; 150m 20.62sec); and Tom Price (U17s 100m 11.5sec; 200m 23.06sec).
Tricia Jackson (U20s 400m hurdles 1:16.5); Ruth Pritchard (U15s javelin 20.69m); Lauren Hunt (U17s discus 30.49m); Andrew Whitton (U15s triple jump 11.8m); Michael Lyness (U15s discus 26.8m); and Charlotte Roach (U17s 1,500m 4:53.5) were other WCAC members to grab gold.
Other Ellesmere Port gold medal winners at Macclesfield included Nicola Gore representing Liverpool Pembroke Sefton (ladies discus 30.72m, shot 11.35m) and Emma-Leigh Heighway of Sale Harriers (U20s 800m 2:17.91).
WCAC have switched their Three Counties Grand Prix Open Track and Field Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 25, to Tuesday, May 24 (7pm), because of a clash with Liverpool's European Champions League final against AC Milan.
