BOXING: VAUXHALL Motors ABC's Nick MacDonald struck gold at the Four Nations Tournament in Liverpool but his injury jinx has struck again.

The busy schedule of the ABA Championships followed by international duty at the Olympia has taken its toll on the 20-year-old who has damaged the ligaments around his knuckles.

MacDonald will now have an operation to correct the problem in the next few days but it will keep him out of action for approximately six weeks, including the visit of a Cuban team to the UK.

The arrival of the Cubans in this country for the first time is seen as a major coup for the Amateur Boxing Association, and their squad could contain reigning Olympic Champion and two-time gold medallist Guillermo Rigondeaux Ortiz in MacDonald's bantamweight section.

At the Four Nations in Liverpool, MacDonald forced his first opponent David Joyce of Ireland into two standing counts on Friday before defeating Scotland's James Ancliff 37-17 on points in Saturday's final.
