GYMNASTICS: TEAM gymnasts from Crewe are going for glory after upsetting the odds to make it to the national finals.

Talented members of Crewe and Nantwich Gymnastics Club only took up the relatively new discipline of Team Gym last summer.

It involves working together in floor, vault and tumbling exercises to produce a spectacular dis-play set to music.

The team of nine girls, aged 12-16, were under-dogs at the regional finals in Halifax recently due to their lack of experience. But they pulled off a shock to surpass the points standard needed for a trip to the finals in Hemel Hempstead, London.

Coach Candy Lakin said: 'Team Gym is quite new to this country and we only started last July. The girls were genuinely shocked to make it to the nationals.

'We are looking forward to it, but it is a bit daunting. We have to up our game and skill level and we are practising at least three nights a week.'

Meanwhile, the club's Team Gym primary squad for eight to 12-year-olds will compete in the Newcastle Open in July.
