LEGENDARY racehorse trainer Ginger McCain has been honoured with a special award from Cheshire County Council.

The Cheshire-based trainer of three-times Grand National winner Red Rum made a historic return to the winners' en-closure in 2004 after Amberleigh House secured him his fourth Aintree victory.

Mr McCain trained the 13-year-old gelding at his Bank House Farm stables in Cholmondeley.

County Council Chairman Nora Dolphin travelled to the Cheshire village to present the 73-year-old trainer with a Chairman's Award.

'Mr McCain has achieved remarkable success as the trainer behind no less than four Grand National victories,' she said.

'I am delighted to present this award today, and I hope it conveys just how proud Cheshire is of him - and indeed of Amberleigh House.'

Red Rum won the Grand National in 1973 and 1974. After finishing second twice, the world's most famous racehorse returned to win an historic third National in 1977.
