HOCKEY: WINNINGTON Park Men's Hockey Club mark their centenary with a weekend of celebrations.

The Sir John Deane's College artificial pitch is the venue for two afternoons of games, which is followed by a dinner at Hartford Hall.

Guest speaker is Howard Davies, the former England and Great Britain player, and the club is staging an exhibition of Winnington memorabilia and photographs, including one of the first team from 1905.

Norman Hughes, who played at Winnington for two seasons as a teenager, is also playing a big part in the weekend.

A defender, Hughes was the first England player to win 100 caps. He also played for Great Britain and went on to coach both national teams, taking part as a player and manager in Olympic and Commonwealth Games and World Championships.

So too is Geoff Poole, one of two players to win international honours while playing with Winnington. He was picked 31 times for Wales, eight for Great Britain and 105 for Cheshire, whom he skippered between 1973 and '76.

Another Park cap, Geoff Cutter - 20 Great Britain, 31 Wales - is unable to attend.

'Given the weather, it will be a memorable weekend for the club,' said secretary Edward Broadhurst.

The pitch timetable includes a demonstration of junior skills and presentation of commemorative medals (noon to 1.30pm) and a Winnington Vets, including Hughes, versus Cheshire and Lancashire XI (2pm) on Saturday.

Winnington Ladies, who celebrate their centenary next year, play a Cheshire President's XI on Sunday (noon) and the Winnington men also play a Cheshire President's team at 2pm.
