Cammell Laird 2 Vauxhall Motors 3

A LEIGHTON McGivern-inspired performance saw Vauxhall Motors see off their Wirral neighbours at Kirklands on Saturday.

The striker made a surprising return to the side after playing against Vauxhall for Stockport County on trial in a friendly last Tuesday.

McGivern started for the Motormen in their second match of their pre-season campaign, delivering a man of the match performance with two goals and an assist.

Manager Anthony Wright said: “He spoke about signing for Stockport but rang me last week and asked to come back.

“He’s going to give it a week before he makes his decision, but at the moment he’s a Vauxhall player.”

McGivern’s first goal came from the penalty spot with just two minutes on the clock. The striker converted from 12 yards after Liam Nethercott was upended in the box.

McGivern then doubled Vauxhall’s advantage on 33 minutes with a 25-yard free kick.

And scorer turned provider in the 69th minute when his pull back was finished by triallist Luke Marson.

The home side hit back late on with strikes from Adam Wilson on 77 minutes and Josh Slay three minutes from time. But Vauxhall held out to make it two wins out of two this pre-season.

Motors’ friendly at Prescot Cables has been moved to Monday, August 1 (7.30pm) from the following night.

Motors were in action at Bootle last night – a match played as the Pioneer went to press – and are at home to Wrexham this Saturday (3pm). Admission is £6 for adults, £3 for concessions and £1 for under 16s.
