WESTMINSTER’S season to remember in the Ellesmere Port & District Sunday League continued at the weekend when they showed nerves of steel to win the George Williamson Memorial Jubilee Challenge Cup.

After a tense final with Cat finished 1-1, Westminster held their nerve to edge a tense penalty shootout 4-3 to lift the cup.

Michael Simmons got Cat’s only goal of the game, with Carl Ngiam on target for the winners.

Woodlands Athletic won the sole Division One game of the day 4-3 at Seahorse.

Adam Cliberry hit a hat-trick for the hosts, but braces from Chris Tew and Lewis Bedwell ensured it was Woodlands who claimed the victory.

SH Groves were 6-2 winners at home to Groves Villa in Friday night’s Premier Division clash.

Phil Morgan (2), Cameron Forster, Iain Forster, Chris Georgeson and Tony Ashton did the damage, with Ross Manders replying for Villa.

Teams are being invited to sign up for a new five-a-side league set to start in Ellesmere Port next week.

Matches will be played on Monday evenings on the state-of-the-art 3G pitches at the Whitby Sports & Social Club Soccer Centre.

League officials have been pleased with the amount of entries they have received, but there is still time for more teams to enter.
