Vauxhall Motors 0 Workington 1
MISSED chances cost the Motormen dear on Saturday as Workington sub Stuart Sloan pounced to snatch all three Blue Square North points for the away side.
Striker Leighton McGivern went close to scoring with a number of goalbound efforts but was thwarted by man-of-the-match keeper Aaron Taylor on a frustrating afternoon for the Ellesmere Port hosts.
The first chance came after just four minutes when McGivern was played in by Josh Wilson. However, the striker blazed over from close range with only the keeper to beat.
Workington’s first opening came on 30 minutes when Jonny Wright swung in a left-wing corner which found striker Kevin Gall, who somehow missed the target from just eight yards.
Vauxhall continued to have the majority of the chances with Paddy Lacey, Wilson and McGivern all going close, but they were unable to find a way past keeper Taylor.
The only goal of the game came after 73 minutes following a rare Workington attack. A right-wing cross fell kindly to Sloan, who made no mistake from 12 yards with a fine left-footed strike.
Motors piled on the pressure in the search of the equaliser with McGivern denied yet again by Taylor in the 75th minute.
Then at the death, Tom Hannigan hit the crossbar with a header from Craig Mahon’s corner.
Vauxhall: Tynan, Taylor, Grocott (Murphy 46), Hannigan, Jones, Beck (Highdale 74), Mahon, Mannix, McGivern, Wilson, Ordish (Lacey 29). Subs: Nethercote, O’Connell.
Motors, who hosted Harrogate Town last night in a match played after the Pioneer had gone to press, are in FA Cup qualifying action this Saturday at Ashington (3pm).
