Vauxhall 0 Stalybridge Celtic 3

VAUXHALL’S final home game of the season ended in a dispiriting defeat.

Keen to provide the perfect send-off to their loyal supporters, instead Carl Macauley’s patched-up side were well beaten by Jimmy Harvey’s visitors at Rivacre Park on Monday.

Stalybridge took the lead six minutes after the break through captain Rhys Meynell before Connor Jennings took advantage of a mistake from goalkeeper Scott Tynan to double the lead.

Missing key trio Josh Wilson, Obi Anoruo and Leighton McGivern and with midfielders Paul Brown and Craig Mahon forced to play up front, it was not until midway through the second half that Motors threatened as Tom Grice and Craig Mahon went close.

But any hopes they had were dashed when Jennings scored his second goal of the game.

Salt was rubbed into the wound when Brown had a late penalty saved.

There was reason to cheer for one Vauxhall player, though, as full-back Lee Dames was voted the club’s Supporters Player of the Year.

Motors complete their Blue Square North campaign away to play-off bound Boston United on Saturday (3pm).

Vauxhall: Tynan, Noone, Dames, Taylor, McMurray, Mannix (Roberts), Mahon, Brown, Moogan (Halligan), Grice, Grocott (Wright). Subs: Macauley, Ritchie. Attendance: 297.
