DESPITE a goal from Mike Hayes, Ellesmere Port suffered their seventh defeat of the season in Division One on Saturday.

The Port came away from their tussle at Blacon YC empty handed after the hosts sealed the win with goals from John Dowdridge and veteran Matty McQuillan.

Port must now steel themselves and get in to the right frame of mind for this Saturday’s Umbro Cheshire FA Amateur Cup quarter final at Newton.

Castrol Social’s fixture with Poulton Victoria was postponed on Saturday as was Vauxhall Motors Reserves’ visit to Marine Reserves.

In Division Two, Capenhurst Villa weathered the storm – and a late attacking flurry from visitors Mallaby – to post an encouraging 4-0 win and keep their outside chances of promotion intact.

Man of the match Tom McGill turned in an eye-catching performance, while Alan Locke, Ryan Nicholl, Robbie Manning and Mike Urmston shared the goals as Cape recorded their 11th win of the season.

Willaston found the net via Dave Forbes, but came unstuck against New Brighton Reserves, who clinched a 2-1 result.

Freak showers of heavy rain forced three games to be abandoned, one of which was Capenhurst Villa Reserves’ match at Fairfield Athletic Reserves. Cape were leading 4-1 when the referee called time on 62 minutes.
