Gainsborough Trinity 1 Vauxhall Motors 1

MOTORS stopped the rot with a point at promotion pushers Gainsborough Trinity.

Three straight defeats had plunged Carl Macauley’s men into the bottom three.

But they gave their Blue Square North survival hopes a huge lift with a much-improved display in Lincolnshire on Saturday.

Motors created the majority of the chances in the first half. Craig Mahon had an effort cleared off the line and debutant Dan Parkinson clipped the crossbar before Tom Hannigan gave them the lead in the 16th minute with a looping header.

Gainsborough would have fallen further behind had defender Hannigan’s long-range attempt not gone the wrong side of the post.

Relieved by the let off, the hosts bossed proceedings after the break and ensured honours ended even when Michael Leary curled in a superb 64th-minute equaliser.

Gainsborough had to play the final 17 minutes with 10 men after former Chester City defender Kevin Sandwith was sent off.

Motors: Tynan, Wynn, Fearnehough, Hannigan, Jones, Horne, Mahon, Mannix, Stockton (Dames 66), Wilson, Parkinson. Subs: Ablett, Farren, Spotswood.

Attendance: 414.
